Radiate like Surya

Let Your Inner Sun Shine Bright
"Keep your face to the sun and you will never see the shadows"
Hellen Keller

November is here, and I couldn’t be more excited about the longer, warmer days filled with sunshine!

I just had a Vedic astrology reading and discovered that the Sun holds a big influence on my journey. It made so much sense to me—why I feel so alive when I’m in the sun, soaking up its warmth, or catching a sunrise or sunset that takes my breath away. The Sun is pure magic, and this month, I want to share that magic with you through our yoga practice.

Surya—the Sanskrit word for the Sun—symbolizes vitality, strength, courage, and that amazing, warm light that we all need a bit more of. When we bring Surya’s energy into our lives, we awaken a sense of radiance within us that brightens our days and inspires those around us. My invitation for you this month is to let your inner light shine a little brighter each day.

The Qualities of Surya: Let’s Embody Radiance

The Sun isn’t just the source of life on our planet; it’s a symbol of our own power to uplift, nurture, and grow. Surya’s energy is all about confidence, courage, and warmth. When we tune into these qualities, we bring them into our own lives in real, tangible ways. Just like the Sun rises without fail, we can choose to show up each day as our brightest selves—grounded, confident, and with warmth in our hearts.

In our yoga practice, Surya’s energy connects to the Solar Plexus, Manipura (located in the centre of our abdomen)—the space where our personal power, energy, and vitality originate. This month, we’ll bring this energy centre to life with practices like Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutation), Pranayama (conscious breathing) and Deep Relaxation designed to help you feel that inner strength and aliveness.

"Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves"
James M. Barrie

Loving reminders from the Sun

As we connect with Surya’s energy, here are a few gentle reminders the Sun has for us:

🌞 The Sun is Always Shining – Even behind the clouds, the Sun never stops shining. This is a reminder for us to stay patient and trust that brightness is there, even during cloudy moments. Challenges come and go like passing clouds, but our light is always present, waiting for the sky to clear.

🌅 Every Day is a Fresh Start – Every sunrise brings a new opportunity to begin again, to take one step closer to creating the life we envision. Let the rising Sun remind you each day that you have the power to start fresh and shape your path one day at a time.

🌻 Be a Sunshine to Others – The Sun is generous, inclusive, and lights up everything in its reach. We can bring this energy into our lives by being a source of warmth and kindness. A simple smile, a compliment, a listening ear, or a few words of encouragement can make someone’s day brighter. Use your own light to remind others of their radiance.

Show Up – The Sun doesn’t “do” anything; it simply is and shows up each day. We, too, can embrace this principle in our lives. Showing up as our true selves, just as we are, has the power to change everything. A gentle affirmation to carry with you: “I wake up, I stand up, I show up, and I shine.”

🌑 Darkness is Not the Opposite of Light, It’s the Absence of It – Embracing our humanness means accepting all our tones, both light and shadow. Let’s be compassionate with ourselves, especially when our shadows make an appearance. By acknowledging that we have both light and dark within, we honour the wholeness of who we are.

Diwali: The Festival of Light

As we connect with the energy of the Sun this month, billions of people worldwide are celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Light, on November 1st this year. Diwali is a beautiful reminder of the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. Originating in India, it’s a time when families and communities come together to light diyas (oil lamps) and candles, symbolising our inner light that protects us from negativity and fear.

Diwali teaches us to nurture our inner light, especially in challenging times. This celebration encourages us to reflect on what “light” means in our lives, to let go of what no longer serves us, and to welcome new beginnings with open arms. As you move through November take a moment to reflect:

How can you choose light, kindness, and positivity each day?

How can you illuminate your surroundings with small acts of warmth and connection?

"Diwali reminds us of the divine light within us all. May you connect with your inner peace and joy."

Bring Surya’s Light into Everyday Moments

Imagine if we all showed up with the radiant, positive energy of the Sun. It’s a beautiful vision, right? This month, I invite you to start each day with a little “hello” to the Sun—whether it’s a quick glance at dawn or a few minutes to soak in the morning light. Visualise that warmth filling you up, energising you from the inside out.

We’ll be doing the same in each of our yoga classes. Through movement, breath, and a touch of stillness, we’ll connect with this powerful energy, leaving every session feeling alive and ready to share that light with the world.

Shine Bright and Uplift

Surya teaches us to shine, not just for ourselves but to uplift the world around us. This month, try sharing your radiance wherever you go—whether it’s a genuine smile, a word of encouragement, or simply showing up as your true self. Make the world a brighter place, one interaction at a time.
