Sprinkle Bhakti

A Heartfelt Holiday Season

The end of the year is always an emotional time. I see some hearts filled with anticipation for the happy gatherings and the warmth of loved ones, while for others is a season that can trigger longing and melancholy missing the presence of family and friends.

Family reunions can become potent catalysts for self-reflection and, if we choose to, beautiful opportunities to do our inner work.

For the last two months of this year, we have explored the energy of Bhakti in our yoga practice. It has been a really lovely exploration of the possibility to spread more love, connection and understanding in our world where we see so much division and conflict on many levels.

So I decided to write this blog post on how we can infuse the energy of Bhakti in our festive season, embracing the nine qualities as a guide to navigate the delicate dance of emotions and foster connection.

I invite you on a journey to make this end of the year a celebration of togetherness, profound love and understanding.

Cultivating Bhakti in Holiday Gatherings

Shravanam (Listening): As you hear the glasses clink and joyous conversations fill the air, take a moment to actively listen to the stories shared. Attend not just with your ears, but with your heart, understanding the deeper motives behind the words. In doing so, you create a space for authentic connection.

Kirtanam (Speaking): Mindfully choose your words during family conversations. Let your voice be a harmonious incantation that spreads positivity and warmth. Turn holiday chatter into a source of comfort and encouragement.

Dasyam (Service): Offer your help selflessly, as an expression of your devotion to your loved ones and the holiday spirit. Whether it's helping with preparations, lending a hand in the kitchen, or simply being present for a family member, acts of service come in many forms and become a bridge to deeper connections.

Smaranam (Remembrance): In the midst of festive chaos, remember your interconnectedness with all present. Reflect on shared memories, acknowledge growth, and foster a sense of togetherness. Let the holiday season be a symphony of shared experiences and hearts.

Archanam (Prayer): Make intentional moments for heartfelt contemplation. Express gratitude for the blessings of the year and appreciate the unique qualities each family member brings to your life. Let your prayers be a silent melody of love.

Vandanam (Integrity): Uphold your values and integrity throughout the festivities. Be consistent in showing up as your highest self, even in the face of holiday stress or family dynamics. Integrity becomes a guiding light, illuminating the path to a more harmonious celebration.

Pada Sevanam (Respect): Show respect and honuor to every family member, recognising the divinity in each. Whether it's a difference of opinion or a shared tradition, acknowledging and respecting diversity of thought enriches the holiday experience.

Atmani Vedanam (Surrender): Release expectations and the need for control. Surrender to the flow of the holidays. Embrace the beauty of unpredictability, finding peace in trust. Surrendering to the present moment allows for a more relaxed and enjoyable celebration.

Sakhyam (Friendship): Forge genuine connections with family members, approaching the festivities with the spirit of friendship. Share your journey, listen to theirs, and celebrate the unique bond that family brings. Let the holiday season strengthen the bonds of love and understanding.

I invite you to unwrap the most precious gift you can give anyone this season or ever - your beautiful, unique presence.

By infusing Bhakti into your celebrations, you not only make space for joy and love but also create a home for understanding and compassion.

Let the air be filled not only with the aroma of festive delights but also with the essence of Bhakti, turning every family gathering into a cherished memory of heartfelt connection.

Wishing you a holiday season filled with love, understanding, and happy moments!
