Dancing with Impermanence

Finding peace in the ever-changing flow of life

Life is always changing

The confronting realisation that we are already in August inspired me to bring the concept of Impermanence as our community intention for our yoga practice. Time, as we experience it, is a perfect example of the fleeting nature of life isn’t it?

So, what's this "impermanence" thing all about? Well, it's a beautiful principle from Buddhist philosophy that reminds us that everything in life is ever-changing. Just like the seasons, our breath, our age, our thoughts and emotions, nothing stays the same. And you know what? That's actually a great gift, as long as we choose to receive it.

Reflect on it… How often have you clung desperately to something, only to feel heartbroken when it slipped away? Impermanence teaches us to loosen our grip on the things we can't control and find peace and contentment in the present moment, just as it is.

“Impermanence does not lead to suffering. What makes us suffer is wanting things to be permanent when they are not”
- Thich Nhat Hanh
Fluffy wonders

One of my favourite ways to appreciate impermanence in my day to day is by watching clouds passing in the sky. As I gaze up at them, I'm reminded that life, too, is constantly changing and evolving. Those clouds are like metaphors for our thoughts and emotions, coming and going, never staying in one place for long. They are a graceful reminder that everything we experience is transient, and if we cherish each passing moment with an open heart, life becomes a beautiful canvas, just like the sky.

This too Shall Pass

But life isn't always clouds, rainbows and butterflies. In those days when the storms seem never-ending, impermanence tells us that tough times are not permanent either. When you're facing those rough waves, remember that this too shall pass. Embrace the challenge as it comes and face your feelings, even the not-so-pretty ones. Let them wash over you like waves on the shore. You're more courageous than you think, and you'll rise again wiser and stronger on the other side.

Live like you were dying

I love this song from Tim McGraw, it reminds me to live each day as if it was my last - to embrace life with a sense of urgency and passion. Impermanence serves as a gentle nudge, urging us to savour every moment and make it count. Not from a place of fear but with huge appreciation for the gift we have.

As we come together in our yoga classes and community, let's take this message to heart. Let's dance like nobody's watching, sing at the top of our lungs, and love with all our hearts. Let's live our lives fully, leaving no room for regrets.

Impermanence on and off the mat

Our practice is a magical playground to embrace impermanence. Each pose we flow into is fleeting, just like the little moments of joy that sprinkle our lives. So, let's forget about nailing the "perfect" posture and simply enjoy the journey. Trust me, those wobbles and adjustments are where the real beauty of our practice lies!

Now, I know that stepping outside the cosiness of our studio can feel like diving back into the hustle and bustle of life. But let's not forget the intention we set together. Carry the spirit of impermanence with you as you walk in the world. Take a moment to breathe, look around, and find gratitude in the little things - that warm cup of tea, a gentle breeze, or a sweet smile from a stranger.

Oh, and don't be too hard on yourself! Impermanence isn't about being perfect; it's about embracing the messy, beautiful journey of life. We'll stumble, we'll rise, and we'll keep moving forward, one breath at a time.

So, dear friends, let's make this August a month where we live fully, love deeply and appreciate our lives with no regrets and make this our way of living.
